Description

Jet Pack is a 1983 single-screen action game developed and published by Activision for the Atari 2600. The player controls a character equipped with a personal jet pack, navigating a vertically scrolling cavern environment. The objective is to collect fuel canisters while avoiding contact with floating mines, stalactites, and the cavern ceiling. The game features a side-view perspective with continuous upward thrust required to maintain altitude. A fuel gauge depletes over time and with each use of the jet pack; running out of fuel results in a fatal fall. The game ends when the player loses all three lives.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are governed by precise control of vertical and horizontal movement. The player character is stationary on the horizontal axis by default. The jet pack is activated by pressing and holding the fire button on the Atari 2600 joystick. While the button is held, the character ascends at a fixed rate. Releasing the button causes the character to descend due to gravity. Horizontal movement is achieved by tilting the joystick left or right while the jet pack is active; the character drifts in the chosen direction. No horizontal movement occurs when the jet pack is off. Tactical techniques include short, controlled bursts of thrust to conserve fuel and maintain a stable altitude near the cavern floor. Players must anticipate mine patterns and use horizontal drifting to weave between obstacles. Collecting fuel canisters resets the fuel gauge to maximum. A common strategy involves staying low to the ground to minimize descent time and using the cavern walls as a reference for altitude control.
