Description

Drunken Zombie is a single-player action game developed by independent studio Pixel Wreck in 2012. The game is set in a procedurally generated city overrun by undead. The player controls a human character who has consumed a large quantity of alcohol, resulting in impaired motor control and distorted perception. The primary objective is to survive as long as possible while navigating through hordes of zombies. The game employs a top-down perspective with pixel art graphics. The player character’s movement is intentionally erratic, with a constant swaying motion and delayed response to input. The game features a scoring system based on time survived and zombies eliminated. No narrative or character development is present; the focus is solely on arcade-style survival.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics center on the character’s drunken state. Movement is controlled via the WASD keys, but each key press introduces a random directional drift of up to 15 degrees. The character cannot run; only a slow, stumbling walk is possible. The left mouse button performs a melee attack with a bottle, which has a 0.8-second wind-up animation. The right mouse button throws a projectile (a random object from the environment) in a parabolic arc, with a 1.5-second cooldown. The spacebar triggers a momentary “vomit” attack that stuns nearby zombies for 2 seconds but leaves the character immobile for 1 second. The Q key consumes a health item, restoring 25% health over 3 seconds. Tactical techniques include using the vomit attack to create escape windows, aiming thrown projectiles at chokepoints to slow zombie groups, and exploiting the movement drift by holding a direction and releasing it to let the character stumble into a desired path. The player must avoid corners, as the delayed response often leads to being trapped. The game ends when health reaches zero.
