Description

Rogue Runner is a 1985 side-scrolling action game developed by Binary Systems for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. The player controls a fugitive known as the Rogue, who must escape a high-security underground facility. The objective is to traverse a series of procedurally generated levels, each consisting of platforms, ladders, and obstacles. The Rogue is pursued by patrolling security drones and must collect data chips to unlock the exit door. The game ends when the Rogue is caught or falls into a pit. A single life is granted per run, with no continues.

Instructions

Gameplay is divided into two phases: navigation and evasion. The player moves the Rogue left or right using the joystick or keyboard cursor keys. The up key initiates climbing on ladders; the down key descends. The fire button performs a short-range punch, which can stun a drone for two seconds. Drones respawn after ten seconds. Data chips are scattered on platforms; collecting five opens the level exit. Tactical techniques include timing jumps over gaps to avoid drone patrol patterns, using ladders to create vertical distance, and punching drones only when cornered to conserve energy. The Rogue’s movement speed is constant, but descending ladders is faster than climbing. A successful run requires memorizing drone spawn points and chip locations, as the level layout changes each attempt.
