Real Cosmos

Real Cosmos is a space exploration and resource management simulation game developed by Stellar Dynamics, released in 2023. The game places the player in command of a single spacecraft tasked with charting a procedurally generated galaxy. The primary objective involves scanning celestial bodies, extracting raw materials, and constructing orbital stations to expand influence. The universe features realistic physics, including gravitational effects from stars and planets, and a dynamic economy influenced by supply and demand across star systems. No combat or adversarial factions exist; the core challenge is logistical optimization and navigation.

Gameplay is divided into three phases: navigation, scanning, and construction. The player controls the spacecraft using a keyboard and mouse. The W, A, S, D keys adjust thrust direction in the ship’s local coordinate system. The Q and E keys rotate the ship clockwise and counterclockwise. The spacebar activates a constant thrust toggle, while the Shift key engages a temporary speed boost, consuming fuel. The mouse controls a reticle for selecting objects; left-click initiates scanning of a targeted planet or asteroid, revealing its resource composition. Right-click sets a waypoint for autopilot, which calculates a gravity-assisted trajectory.

Tactical techniques include using planetary gravity wells for slingshot maneuvers to conserve fuel. For efficient resource extraction, the player must align the ship’s cargo bay with a station’s docking port, indicated by a green targeting bracket, and press the F key to initiate transfer. Fuel management is critical: the player monitors the fuel gauge on the HUD and refuels by docking at any station. To maximize station output, the player prioritizes scanning high-density resource asteroids before constructing a station, as this yields a permanent production bonus. The Tab key opens the system map, allowing jump navigation between stars.
