Popcorn Thief

Popcorn Thief is a single-player arcade-style game released in 2023 by independent developer Stray Pixel Studios. The player controls a raccoon character tasked with stealing popcorn from a cinema concession stand while avoiding detection by a human attendant. The game is presented from a top-down perspective with pixel art graphics. The objective is to collect a target number of popcorn kernels within a time limit across increasingly difficult levels. Each level introduces new obstacles, such as moving patrons, cleaning staff, and security cameras. The game features a score multiplier system based on consecutive successful thefts without being spotted.

Gameplay is turn-based and stealth-oriented. The player moves the raccoon using the W, A, S, and D keys for up, left, down, and right movement, respectively. The spacebar initiates a "sneak" mode, reducing movement speed but eliminating noise that alerts the attendant. The left mouse button is used to interact with popcorn containers, triggering a collection animation that takes 1.5 seconds. The right mouse button activates a "distraction" ability, which creates a sound at a targeted location, drawing the attendant away for 3 seconds. The attendant patrols a fixed path; if the raccoon enters the attendant's line of sight (a 90-degree cone extending 4 tiles), the game enters a "caution" state. If the raccoon remains in sight for more than 2 seconds, the level fails. Tactical techniques include using the distraction ability to lure the attendant away from high-value popcorn piles, timing movements between the attendant's patrol cycles, and utilizing "sneak" mode when crossing open areas near cameras. Collecting all kernels in a level grants a bonus of 500 points.
