Description
KULI is a 2024 puzzle-platformer video game developed by the independent studio Denki Works. The game is presented in a 2.5D side-scrolling perspective with a minimalist, low-poly art style. The player controls a small, cube-shaped robot named Kuli, who is tasked with navigating a series of abstract, geometric environments to restore power to a dormant machine world. The narrative is conveyed entirely through environmental storytelling and non-verbal cues. KULI features a single-player campaign consisting of 60 levels, divided into six distinct biomes. The game is available on Windows, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.
Instructions
Gameplay in KULI is centered on momentum-based movement and precise timing. The player character, Kuli, can move left or right, jump, and perform a ground pound. The primary control scheme uses a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. On a keyboard, the A and D keys control horizontal movement, the W key initiates a jump, and the S key executes a ground pound. On a gamepad, the left analog stick or D-pad controls movement, the A button (or bottom face button) is for jumping, and the B button (or right face button) is for the ground pound.
The core mechanic involves collecting energy orbs to activate switches and platforms. Kuli cannot attack enemies; instead, the player must avoid or outmaneuver hostile geometric entities. Tactical techniques include chaining ground pounds to break through fragile floors and using momentum from slopes to reach higher ledges. A key technique is the "pound-jump," where the player performs a ground pound immediately after a jump to gain a slight vertical boost upon landing, allowing access to otherwise unreachable areas. The game also features a time-trial mode for each level, encouraging speedrunning through optimized route planning.
