Description
Hop Hop is a minimalist platforming video game developed by independent studio Spoonful Games, released in 2023 for PC and mobile platforms. The game presents a single-screen challenge in which the player controls a small, round character named Hop. The objective is to navigate a series of floating platforms arranged in a vertical or horizontal sequence, collecting glowing orbs while avoiding gaps and moving obstacles. Each level is completed when Hop reaches a designated exit portal. The game features a clean, pastel-colored art style with no background music, relying solely on subtle sound effects for jumps and orb collection. Levels increase in difficulty by introducing rotating platforms, disappearing tiles, and timed pressure plates. The game contains 100 levels across five themed worlds, with no narrative or character development.
Instructions
Gameplay mechanics are based on precise timing and spatial awareness. Hop can only move left or right and perform a single jump. There is no double jump, wall jump, or dash ability. The character automatically sticks to the edge of platforms if landing partially, but will slide off if the landing surface is too narrow. Each level is a static screen; the camera does not scroll. The player must plan a route through the platforms, as many orbs are placed in positions requiring a specific jump arc to collect.
Controls on PC use the A and D keys for left and right movement, and the spacebar for jumping. On mobile, a virtual joystick on the left side controls horizontal movement, and a tap on the right side of the screen performs a jump. There is no pause function during a level; the player must complete or fail the attempt. Failure occurs when Hop falls off the bottom of the screen or touches a red obstacle. Upon failure, the level resets instantly.
Tactical techniques include the "edge hop," where the player jumps just before reaching the edge of a platform to gain a slightly longer horizontal distance. Another technique is the "drop catch," where the player intentionally falls off a platform and immediately presses jump to land on a lower platform directly below. For rotating platforms, the player must time movement to match the platform's tilt, moving in the opposite direction of the rotation to maintain balance. Collecting all orbs in a level is optional but required for unlocking bonus content. The optimal strategy is to memorize the platform layout and execute a continuous sequence of jumps without stopping, as hesitation often leads to mistimed landings.
