Description
Haaland Funny Face is a digital party game developed by independent studio Oddball Interactive, released in 2024 for mobile platforms and PC. The game centers on a single objective: manipulating the facial features of a cartoon representation of footballer Erling Haaland to create the most absurd or humorous expressions within a time limit. Players are presented with a blank-faced avatar and a set of adjustable parameters including eyebrow angle, eye size, mouth width, nose length, and cheek puffiness. The game features both a solo mode, where players attempt to match a target expression shown on screen, and a competitive multiplayer mode where up to four players take turns creating faces that are then voted on by the group. The visual style is deliberately low-resolution and exaggerated, with a color palette limited to primary colors and skin tones. The game does not include any licensed audio or official likeness rights, instead relying on a generic caricature. Scoring is based on accuracy in solo mode or peer votes in multiplayer, with no persistent progression system beyond a local high score list.
Instructions
Gameplay mechanics are turn-based and time-restricted. In solo mode, a target face is displayed for five seconds, then hidden. The player must recreate it using the adjustment tools within a thirty-second round. In multiplayer, each player has twenty seconds to create a face based on a randomly generated prompt, such as "surprised" or "angry." All faces are then displayed simultaneously, and players vote anonymously for the funniest or most accurate interpretation. The player with the most votes after five rounds wins.
Operation controls differ by platform. On mobile, the player uses touch gestures: a horizontal swipe on the left side of the screen adjusts eyebrow angle, a vertical swipe on the right side controls eye size, a pinch gesture on the center adjusts mouth width, and a two-finger drag changes nose length. A dedicated button labeled "Puff" toggles cheek puffiness on or off. On PC, the player uses the mouse: clicking and dragging the left mouse button on the face area rotates a selection wheel that highlights the feature to adjust, then scrolling the mouse wheel increases or decreases that feature's value. The spacebar locks in the current expression for submission.
Tactical techniques focus on speed and exaggeration. In solo mode, players should prioritize the most distinctive feature of the target face first, typically the mouth or eyebrows, as these have the highest visual impact. In multiplayer, creating an expression that is extremely exaggerated in one feature, such as maximally wide eyes or an extremely wide mouth, tends to receive more votes than a balanced but subtle expression. Players should avoid adjusting all features equally, as the voting system favors memorable extremes. A common winning strategy is to set one feature to its maximum value and leave the rest at default, as this creates a clear, easily recognizable joke.
