Dead Rails

Dead Rails is a survival horror video game developed by Iron Horse Studio and released in 2023 for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is set in an alternate 1890s American frontier where a catastrophic event known as the “Rust Plague” has transformed organic matter into metallic, hostile entities. Players assume the role of a lone train engineer tasked with navigating a decaying transcontinental railway network. The primary objective is to reach the rumored safe zone of “New Eden” while managing limited resources, repairing the steam locomotive, and defending against infected creatures and human scavengers. The game features a non-linear map with procedurally generated tracks, dynamic weather, and a day-night cycle that affects enemy behavior. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling, found documents, and radio broadcasts.

Gameplay mechanics center on train operation and survival management. The player controls the locomotive from a third-person perspective. Movement controls: W/A/S/D for walking, Shift to sprint, and Space to jump. Train controls: E to enter/exit the cab, Q to apply brakes, R to increase throttle, F to sound the horn. Resource management involves coal (fuel), water (steam pressure), and scrap metal (repairs). The player must periodically stop to scavenge stations and derelict cars for supplies. Combat uses a revolver (mouse left-click to fire, right-click to aim) and a melee wrench (mouse left-click to swing). Tactical techniques include: maintaining steam pressure above 50% to outrun fast enemies; using the train horn to attract and cluster enemies before reversing over them; and prioritizing scrap metal collection to repair boiler damage, which causes gradual speed loss. Night travel is discouraged due to increased enemy aggression; players should seek shelter in lit stations. The game ends permanently upon player death or train destruction, with no checkpoints.
