Description

Clever Crow is a single-player puzzle game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Tree Studios. The game is set in a series of hand-drawn, two-dimensional environments representing a rural landscape. The player controls a crow, referred to as the Clever Crow, which must solve environmental puzzles to retrieve shiny objects and return them to a central nest. The game contains no dialogue or written narrative; the story is conveyed entirely through visual sequences and the crow’s interactions with the world. The core objective across 40 levels is to manipulate objects, activate mechanisms, and navigate obstacles using the crow’s limited physical abilities. The game emphasizes logic and observation over speed or reflexes. Each level presents a self-contained challenge with a single solution, though alternative methods for object retrieval are occasionally possible. The game does not include a fail state; the crow cannot die, and all actions are reversible.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are based on the crow’s ability to pick up, carry, and drop objects. The crow can hold one object at a time. Objects include stones, sticks, keys, and metal rings. The crow can also push or pull certain objects by walking into them while holding nothing. Mechanisms include levers, pressure plates, gates, and water spouts. The crow activates pressure plates by standing on them or placing an object on them. Levers are toggled by pecking at them. Water spouts push the crow or objects in a fixed direction when activated.

Operation controls are limited to four directional inputs and two action buttons. The directional pad or analog stick moves the crow left, right, up, and down. The A button performs a peck action, used to pick up an object, drop an object, or activate a lever. The B button performs a jump, which is a short hop used to clear small gaps or reach low ledges. The crow cannot fly; the jump is the only vertical movement. The game does not require rapid button presses.

Tactical techniques involve careful observation of object weight and placement. Stones are heavy and can hold down pressure plates permanently. Sticks are light and can be carried to block water spouts or bridge gaps. Keys are used only on matching locks. The crow must often retrieve an object from one area, carry it to another, and then use it to unlock a path or activate a mechanism. A common technique is to use a stone to hold a pressure plate while the crow moves to a different area. Another technique involves dropping an object into a water spout’s path to redirect the flow. The player should examine each level from multiple angles before moving, as hidden objects or alternate routes are often obscured by foreground elements. The game rewards patience; rushing leads to missed solutions.
