Description
Batrix is a single-player puzzle-action game developed by independent studio Nullpointer Interactive and released in 2023. The game is set in a procedurally generated digital network where the player controls a small, shape-shifting entity called a Batrix. The objective is to navigate through a series of interconnected hexagonal chambers, each containing a central energy core. The Batrix must absorb energy nodes scattered across the chamber while avoiding hostile security programs known as Sentinels. The game features a minimalist visual style with a monochromatic palette accented by neon blue and red highlights. The core loop involves collecting nodes to charge the Batrix’s energy meter, then using that energy to destabilize the chamber’s core, allowing passage to the next level. Failure occurs if the Batrix’s energy is depleted by Sentinel contact or if the core destabilization timer expires without completion.
Instructions
Gameplay mechanics in Batrix are built around three primary actions: movement, absorption, and core destabilization. The Batrix moves continuously in a straight line within the hexagonal grid until it encounters a wall or a node. The player controls the direction of movement by rotating the Batrix’s trajectory. Absorption occurs automatically when the Batrix passes over an energy node, adding to the energy meter. The core destabilization sequence requires the player to position the Batrix within a designated radius of the chamber’s core and hold a specific input to transfer energy. The transfer depletes the energy meter over time, and the process must be completed without interruption from Sentinels.
Operation controls are mapped to a standard keyboard or controller. On keyboard, the left and right arrow keys rotate the Batrix’s movement direction by 60 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. The spacebar initiates and maintains the energy transfer to the core. On a controller, the left analog stick rotates the movement direction, and the A button (Xbox) or X button (PlayStation) activates the transfer. The escape key or start button pauses the game and opens the menu.
Tactical techniques include path planning to maximize node collection while avoiding Sentinel patrol patterns. Sentinels follow predictable linear paths that can be observed before entering a chamber. Players should prioritize collecting nodes along the chamber’s perimeter to build energy reserves before approaching the core. A technique known as “ghosting” involves rotating the Batrix’s direction rapidly just before a wall collision to create a tight turning radius, allowing evasion of Sentinels in narrow corridors. Energy transfer should be initiated only when the Batrix is at maximum energy to minimize the time spent vulnerable near the core. Using the environment, such as positioning the Batrix behind walls, can block Sentinel line-of-sight during the transfer phase.
