Description
ASTRO CHICKENS is a fixed-screen arcade shooter developed by Konami and released in 1982. The player controls a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, defending a row of eggs from descending alien chickens. The objective is to prevent the chickens from stealing the eggs and to eliminate all enemies across multiple waves. The game features a single-screen playfield with a top-down perspective. Graphics are simple, with colorful sprites representing chickens, eggs, and the player’s cannon. The game ends when all eggs are stolen or the player loses all lives.
Instructions
Gameplay proceeds in waves. Each wave begins with a formation of chickens descending from the top. Chickens move in patterns, occasionally diving toward the eggs. The player fires upward to destroy them. A chicken that reaches an egg picks it up and flies off-screen, reducing the egg count. If all eggs are taken, the game ends. The player has three lives. Controls use a joystick for left and right movement and a single fire button. The cannon can only fire one shot at a time; the shot must hit an enemy or exit the screen before another can be fired. Tactical techniques include aiming for chickens that are closest to the eggs, prioritizing diving chickens over those in formation, and using rapid, precise shots to maximize kill rate. The player should avoid firing randomly, as the single-shot limitation requires accuracy. Positioning the cannon directly under a diving chicken increases hit probability. Higher waves introduce faster chicken movement and more aggressive diving patterns, demanding quicker reflexes and tighter shot timing.
