Description
Animal Klotski is a digital puzzle game released in 2023, developed by Indie Studio Pineapple Games. The game adapts the classic sliding block puzzle format, known as Klotski, by replacing traditional numbered or abstract blocks with distinct animal characters. The objective is to slide the animal blocks within a confined rectangular board to allow a specific target block, typically a larger animal such as a bear or elephant, to exit through a designated opening at the bottom. The game features a grid-based board, usually 4x5 cells, populated with blocks of varying sizes: 2x2, 2x1, 1x2, and 1x1. Each block is illustrated with a unique animal, such as a fox, rabbit, or owl, and the target block is always the largest. The game includes over 100 levels, each with a unique starting configuration and a minimum number of moves required for a perfect solution. No timers or scoring systems are present; the sole metric is the number of moves taken to solve the puzzle. The game is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android platforms.
Instructions
Gameplay mechanics are based entirely on spatial reasoning and sequential planning. The player must move blocks horizontally or vertically within the board to clear a path for the target block to slide to the exit. Blocks cannot be rotated or removed; they can only slide into empty adjacent cells. The board has no wrap-around edges, and blocks cannot overlap. The game ends when the target block is moved completely through the exit slot at the bottom edge of the board.
Operation controls differ by platform. On desktop versions, the player clicks and holds a block with the left mouse button, then drags it in the desired direction. The block will snap to the nearest valid grid position upon release. On mobile devices, the player touches and drags a block with a finger. Alternatively, on both platforms, the player can tap a block to select it, then tap an adjacent empty cell to move it one step. Undo and reset functions are available via on-screen buttons, allowing the player to revert moves or restart the level.
Tactical techniques focus on efficient pathfinding. A primary technique is to identify the target block's exit path early and work backward from that goal. Players should prioritize moving smaller 1x1 blocks into corners or along edges to create space for larger blocks. Another technique involves creating a "buffer zone" of two or more empty cells in a row or column, which allows larger blocks to shift positions. Players should avoid moving blocks in circles without progress; counting moves and planning sequences of at least five moves ahead is recommended for achieving the minimum move count. The game does not penalize extra moves, but the solution counter displays the player's total moves versus the par.
